ABOUT
Jeremy Bolton Berryman-Denis (Aka: J.B.B. Denis) is a visual artist who specializes in creating paintings and drawings grounded in the timeless themes of transformation, spiritual practice, contradiction, and history-informed by personal experience as well as deep research.
Raised by a single mother, grandmother, and great aunts, this unconventional family was juxtaposed by its connection to the American South. Today's interracial and LGBTQ relatives descend from Confederate veterans and ex-slaves, Appalachian frontiersmen and wealthy planters. These family idiosyncrasies have left Bolton-Denis with equal parts pride in his diversely American heritage and resentment for the innumerable prejudices born from that same history of conquest, supremacy, and exploitation. The world today exists right within this state of dissonance-between the gilded, hierarchical past and our gilded, revolutionary present-and that flux between history and modernity is the quintessence of J.B.B. Denis' work.
Growing up in Northern Virginia, Bolton-Denis studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland and received a BFA in Painting in 2024. There he also received The Davinci Award, The Creative Vision Award, and The Academic Excellence Scholarship in essay writing.
